The Big Night

I enjoyed Oscars night this year more than any I can remember in a long time. It’s fun when we get every joke and movie reference because we’ve seen almost every single contender.

There were so many delightful films this year (Hugo, The Artist, Midnight in Paris, Beginners, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, The Muppets) as well as some powerful and moving ones (A Separation, The Tree of Life, The Help).

Sylvain always prints out one ballot sheet for each of us, and we mark them ahead of time. We line up some appropriately celebratory refreshments and I snuggle down in the rocking chair in his living room in front of the ridiculously large screen TV.

About 30 seconds before a winner is announced, one of us will ask the other, “Who did you choose for this one?” Then one of us will divulge a prediction, which is often followed by the other saying, “Me too!”

Through the whole evening we were either tied or one of us was ahead by only one point.

In the end I had correctly predicted 17 of the 24 winners, a personal best. Sylvain was only trailing by one guess. We both did better than many of the entertainment magazines and blogs, just so you know! (I say as I stick my right leg out through the slit in my dress.)

Did you watch the Academy Awards? What did you think?

  1. Funny: the only two moments I saw were Angelina sticking her leg out and another guy who won something imitating her = I got your reference.

If I ever bet on the Oscars, I’m going to consult with you and S first for my predictions. I’ll give you guys a commission, of course, when I rake in the big winnings.

  2. You two have SO MUCH FUN together. I love hearing about it. I watched a little bit of Meryl Streep accepting her award and Olivia Jones (?) from the help too accepting hers–very nice. I think it would have been vastly more meaningful had I seen any of the movies or had someone to watch with, either. xoO

  3. It should be noted that Kelly’s legs are MUCH sexier than Angelina’s. :-)

  4. And not just her legs. :-)

  5. Didn’t catch the Acadamy Awards Kelly, since (sadly) I have only managed to see Midnight in Paris and The Descendants.

The picture of you and Sylvain happily competing in front of the ‘Big’ screen is a lovely one!

I did see ‘the leg’ though – she will never live it down!

  6. What a fun night you two had. And congrats of the good guesses. I cancelled my TV awhile back so can’t watch. I havent seen most of those, but look forward to indulging via Netflix.

  7. I have not had a TV for 14 years and I used to love to watch the Acadamy awards, always watched all the movies. I only saw one of the films, so I would not have known who to vote for anyway, I seem to be out of the loop these days. Funny enough though a friend told me about the “leg”, so I knew what you were talking about :-).
Glad you two had so much fun.
    xoxo

  8. I missed the leg!
But I saw Meryl accepting her Oscar. About time too! I wasn’t sure if she really was getting it for this particular movie or if it was just TIME!!! I like her personality and the words of her speech very much.
How big exactly is your/his ridiculously huge TV screen? I just want to know if when we get ours (soon) if it’s going to be even more obscene than yours!
    LOL
