Storyteller has been talking about the importance of kindness.
It is not that rare for me to overhear people cursing insurance companies. Some people feel they are evil and are out to make obscene profits. Having worked in the industry for eight years, I can tell you that insurance companies strive to keep premiums down. The reason for this is competition. If you can offer better rates, you can attract more business. That said, I will admit their are–in my opinion–too many middle men (and women) in insurance. That surely drives costs up. One layer is made up of brokers, who work for the consumer and whose job it is to shop around and find the best deal for the consumer. A percentage of the profits go to those people. Then there are the agents or marketing people who work for the insurance companies and whose job it is to attract business to the company and build relationships with brokers. A certain percentage of profits go to them. If one day those middle people can be taken out of the picture and replaced with a more efficient interface, rates will be lower.
Another misconception is that claims adjudicators look for ways not to pay claims. I have not worked at a property & casualty insurance company, but I can say that my experience with one life / health / disability company and two travel insurance companies contradicts this suspicion. The adjudicators alongside of whom I’ve worked were compassionate people who looked for ways to pay claims unless they had good reason to suspect fraud.
I enjoy my new job. One of the most fulfilling aspects of it are the daily opportunities I have to interact with people who are going through or have just gone through a stressful situation. They are either visiting Canada from another country or live in Canada and visited another country. They have lost luggage or had a trip cancelled due to weather or a death in the family or illness. Or they got sick while abroad. Or they were in an accident.
I have a chance to make a small difference through compassion, patience and kindness. An elderly woman calls and apologizes for bothering me, but she needs help filling out the claim form. I assure her she can call me as many times as she needs to, that’s my job.
I’ve had several claims that on the surface appeared not to be payable. After I went over the wording of the policy very carefully, however, I judged them to have merit and was able to convince my supervisor of this.
Another satisfying aspect of the job is sending people their money as quickly as I can. Many times the foreign hospital won’t honour a brand of insurance they’ve never heard of, so the patient has to pay out of pocket then be reimbursed by us. I try to remember that not everyone has enough money in the savings account to afford an emergency room visit. Their credit card statement is due and they need that money back.
A friend once marvelled at my ability to work for an insurance company… to “sell out” in that way, to be part of the evil system.
I take comfort knowing I am making the system a little less evil in my own small way.

You have helped to restore my faith a little, but just a little. We are currently having a difficult time dealing with a dreadful Insurance company. Last year we had to deal with another, far worse.
Once we did find them to be a positive experience.
Knowing that there are good people such as yourself working in the industry gives me hope, much hope :-)

Thanks for sharing your experience so eloquently here, for leaving two comments on my blog today, and for the “love-link” to Small Reflections. Those people with whom you come into contact are fortunate that you care so much about helping and are patient enough to do so graciously.
Hugs and blessings,

I too commend you for the good work you are doing. You give the insurance business a good name Kelly!
I hope when and if I have to deal with one again they have someone as nice and caring as you working there.

I have only had good experiences with insurance companies, but I am aware they have a bad name. But there are many fraudulent people out there unfortunately and I believe if you are honest and true the insurance system will work for you. (positivity)
It heartens me also, that you are out there making a difference in the world. Keep that lovely energy happening..

I’m sure you are making much more than just a small difference. Compassion, patience and kindness are not the ways people expect when dealing with an insurance, but for sure everybody is glad and relieved when they encounter the unexpected.

I had the same type of experience working in my family’s flower shop back in Georgia. While it was the hardest part of my job, working with families who had just lost a loved one gave me a satisfaction few things have – to offer a little comfort – to create beautiful flowers for their dearly departed – to sometimes just sit and cry with them. It fed some important part of my soul.
I worked in P&C insurance for eight years also. I still have really mixed emotions about the industry, but it definitely gave me a different perspective and I think alot of people’s dislike of it is just misunderstanding. People that work in insurance are mostly like us – they want to help if they can.

I know I appreciate it when people offer a humane touch from within businesses like insurance companies. I have a dentist now who actually sends thank you cards and little notes. Things like that make a big difference.

Hi, Kelly!
First of all I want to thank you for your insightful posts.
I have some problems with the commenting section … I thought it happens just in Blogger, but for the past few days , I have had it in WordPress, too.
Your judgment and analysis in the recent post was amazing … years ago I thought people who are more spiritual and moral cannot work in places which are materialistic.. but today I thinks just the reverse.. such people can change these places… And you have proved it.. and be sure your role is larger than you think… all the people you encounter and have that positive effect on , are connected to others…and this makes a chain..
Your post on Needs was superb… it helped me to help one of my students who’s got some emotional problems.. She has lived just for others and the qoutations from the book you talked about wre very illustrative and to the point..
Thank you for sharing your experiences and wisdom with us.
And the baby crow is standnig in awe how you could understand him and the real cause of his anger… An I told him Kelly is a brave adventurer in the inner world .. she is got a vast knowlege about the forces working within us .
I’ll write about the answers to baby crow in a new post, Kelly. Thank you for your profound reflection.
Hugs
human being
P.S. as soon as i can send a comment, i put this in your comment section.

Oh, Kelly, thank god for people like you. I didn’t realize you work for an insurance company…add that to your love of Excel…and you have what would be FOR ME a job from hell…ha! What I love is that you are truly helping me to see the GOOD in things that I judge to be BAD…you know, if I were to judge… ;) I have no doubt that you are truly an ambassador of kindness and compassion and thoughtfulness in what is considered by many a less than compassionate industry. Good for you!!
