I wonder when my Amazon package will arrive? I am just coming to the end of the three books I’ve been reading (two bedside, one I read on my lunch breaks) and so I’ll be ready for that package any day now. If you’re interested in which three books I’m finishing and what I thought of them, you can check out Karen’s 52 Books Blog. I reported on A Return to Love, Transformational Weight Loss and The Sociopath Next Door.
My car has a name. I was sitting in the driver’s seat enjoying the hot stone spa treatment on my often sore lower back, pondering possible names, including the ones you all so kindly suggested–plus a few of my own–when out of the blue she told ME what her name is. Sophie. So I said, “Oh, okay. Well, hello, Sophie. Nice to meet you.”
Some people with OCD like to make lists. Here is a list of all the cars I’ve had. Many of them were given or loaned to me by my step-father to drive around after he picked them up for a song and fixed them but before he found a buyer. Or something like that.
- 1972 VW Karmann Ghia named Starchild
- 1968 VW Bug named Li’l Bug
- 1972 Mercedes diesel not sure what model – no name
- 1978? Mazda RX-7 (loaner – no name)
- 1988 Yugo named Victor (get it?)
- 1986 Mazda 323 hatchback – no name
- 2008 VW City Golf named Sophie
One small but notable thing from this week: I received and filled out my absentee ballot for the Arkansas primary.
Oh, and Sylvain has signed us up for one of those services that ships you movies on DVD and we are looking for titles to put on our rental list. What are your top “must see” films? I especially love indie films, quirky stuff… and we don’t mind subtitles.

Sophie – what a great name! I so like that she told you herself.
Thanks for linking to the 52 books site. I’m going to join!
I didn’t know you had OCD. I have a mild case of it, most notably in checking everything a million times before I go to bed and before I leave the house. It can take forever sometimes and be most frustrating with fearfulness and insecurity.

Kelly, I heartily recommend Elling, a Norwegian film which does include subtitles, and is of a subject matter which would touch the heart of anyone with adjustment issues.
It is about six or seven years old, but it is popular enough as a rental I would expect it to still be available.

Here’s to ‘Sophie’, may you have many happy and safe travels. I liked Victor the best (appeals to my sense of humour!). Movies I will have to think about.

Hello to Sophie the car. Man, I do hate to be out of books. I like to have a stack waiting for me. Do you know the website “Bookmooch.” You create a list of books you want to give away, you get points, you use the points to order books you want. All is free except when you mail your book to the person who wants it. But then eventually someone else mails a book you want to you so it evens out. Course they don’t necessarily have the bks you want when you want them.
I belong to Netflix which mails me movies. It is wonderful esp here in the boonies. Glad to get the recommendation from above of Elling. But so far except for “La Vie en Rose” if you like Edith Piaf, I don’t have any recc’s. Will think on it. Have fun, Suki

Sophie is a beautiful name… All real and fictional Sophies I’ve ever known were so friendly and lively….
Many many lively drives with Sophie.
Books and movies … such good friends, too!

Lizzi suggests:
‘House of Flying Daggers’ (visually stunning),
‘Room With a View’ (most Merchant Ivory Productions),
‘Jean do Florette’ & ‘Manon Des Source’,
‘Breakfast at Tiffanys’,
‘Tea With Mussolini’
‘Enchanted April’
Mark suggests:
‘Blues Brothers’
‘Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels’
‘Snatch’
‘Trainspotting’
‘Kill Bill: 1 & 2′
‘This Is Spinal Tap’
‘Seven Samauri’
These definitely fall into 2 categories “Chick Flicks” and “Lads Flicks” – hope you find some of them as enjoyable as we did.

Sophie…you have a wise car.
:) Victor Yugo
I just watched “Cradle will Rock” and really liked it. It’s about the cultural upheaval that took place in the U.S. during the 1930’s…artists and the labor movement.

Do you miss StarChild? I miss my Karmann Ghia, the one I totaled in front of the State Hospital on Markham years ago. Ouch.

May you and Sophie have many a happy journey together!
What are gas prices like in Canada anyway?
We are paying $3.15 a gallon here (ARCO, cheapest gas).
I had Betsy, my first Toyota Corola (light blue)
Rusty, my Honda Civic (Rust color brown)
My silver van (Toyota) guess it wasn’t named, drove her 14 years.
and now my silver CRV
I like silver.
Maybe I’ll name mine Hi Ho Silver!
LOL

I love Netflix!! Below are my last year’s 5-star rated films.
I like to do things like themes– sometimes I’ll do several in a row from one country or another, or sometimes a series of films with one name, like “Fire,” “Water,” “Chocolat” etc, or sometimes films titled “The ________,” especially if there’s an additional similarity like color, FI- “The Blue Kite,” “The Red Violin.” Or women’s names, like “Iris,” “Amelie,” “Frida.”
The first two are cartoons, but really good. Enjoy!
The Triplets of Belleville
Tokyo Godfathers
Iris (if you’re into crying)(warning: most depressing film I’ve ever seen, don’t see it in a ‘down’ phase)
Water (Deepa Mehta)
Chocolat (the one directed by Lasse Hallström)
The Piano (Jane Campion)
The Red Violin (Francois Girard)
Kundun (Scorsese)(I really like foreign films that show how regular people live and are beautifully shot)(not that the Dali Lhama is a regular person, but the people around him)
March of the Penguins
Fire (Deepa Mehta)(if a lesbian film doesn’t freak you out)
The King of Masks (Tian-Ming Wu)
A Passage to India (David Lean) (see this before Gandhi for a chronological understanding of India)
Gandhi
To Live (Yimou Zhang)
