Dream: Apple Seeds and Crickets

December 26, 2007 · 17 Comments

I only remember a snippet from my dreams two nights ago.  I was trying to plant apple trees but the area of black earth where I was trying to sow the apple seeds–an area that seemed to be the inside of a barn with one side open to the elements–was covered in crickets. I tried dropping a few seeds among the crickets and remember wondering if the seeds needed to be pushed into the soil or could be dropped on the surface like that.

I tried Googling apple tree symbolism and came up with spiritual growth.  I couldn’t find much about crickets as symbols.

Your dreamwork is so vivid. What kind of associations do you have with crickets?
When I think about them, I remember the lucky crickets that were kept in cages.

Have done different approaches to looking at dreams at different times. One approach is to say that everything in the dream is me or an aspect of me. Apple trees, black earth, seeds, barn, openness, crickets. The gist of the Gestalt way is to get these parts of the dream talking, isnt it.

Another is (when interpreting anothers dream not that one can really do that) I this were my dream…..

Course another is to look at conventional symbols. My understanding is that to the Chinese, crickets are good luck. So maybe all those crickets are chirping you into another year of good luck. (Yes they did catch them and put them in wooden cages). Then there is Dickens’ tale called “A Cricket on the Hearth.” Can’t remember what that was about though.

How did you feel after having the dream? Happy, sad etc. Hearing the dream I hear it as a happy, hopeful dream full of positive images and so forth.

I seem to remember something about an apple tree from the Bible. Here you are trying to grow your own. The forbidden fruit? Spilling seeds? Plagues of crickets? This dream seems to be really drenched in sexuality to me. You know, sexuality, fertility, decay – all those things. I should probably stop right about here.

HA! I seem to recall a certain wise cricket in a fairytale.

I’m not much help with dreams. Though I’ve tried to keep a dream journal by my bed, I seldom remember much. I am reminded of the children’s book A CRICKET IN TIMES SQUARE in which I learned crickets represent good luck.

You’ve had a busy few days blogging and I’m doing my best to catch up all over this virtual world. The two posts on GWCC remind me how grateful I am I haven’t placed this burden upon myself because, like you … I’m a recovering perfectionist and don’t need that kind of stress in my life … however I do “watch myself” and follow the path of you and several others who have taken up this challenge and blogged about it. As for missing work, when I retired I thought I might miss teaching. Oddly, although I occasionally miss the interaction with children, I don’t miss the job itself and I’m grateful to have expansive time to use as I choose.
    Hugs and blessings,

I’ve read online that in Chinese symbolism, a cricket symbolizes a fighting spirit. A little search and I found this which I thought was cool: “The Chinese love of the cricket, especially for its song, but also for sport gave rise to a variety of art forms associated with the care of these prized insects. Considered a symbol of good omen, the cricket is a metaphor for summer and courage. Its life-cycle from egg, to larva, to its metamorphosis into an adult insect represents the Buddhist cycle of life, death, and rebirth.”

the only cricket that comes to my mind is Jimmnie Cricket in Pinoccio. Can’t remember anything else about him though…no help here.

I just showed my SIL (karen) you on UTUBE and she kept saying you and she have many of the same mannerisms. Go figure…same gene pool.

Cool! Ive just wrote a piece about symbols because I ‘ve got a book on symbols for Christmas. The cricket is not in the book…….
But it represents good luck, think of Mulan and her cricket. Also represents spring and fertility .
Coincidence? I wrote a piece on orange and the apple is mentioned there as well and the forbidden fruit…….I wrote a piece on symbols, which I will post tomorrow. I was just about going to bed and than I decided to take a look at your weblog and I find this post, can’t be just coïncidence.
    Goodnight and sweet dreams!
    love Marianne

Thank you to everyone for your ideas! I’m still mulling this one over.

Jiminy, I’d think crickets symbolized luck and good sense. At least I’d think that if I were remembering Pinocchio’s story.

Yes, Santa was good to me because I was a good girl all year long :>)

As always, I enjoyed your exploration, of your dreams.
    Apple trees and crickets.
The wonder our unconscious will deliver to us!

Your deam is about introspection and inner growth… insects in general can represent minor botherings or problems… maybe you care much about some details.. this is caused by perfectionism… your dream may suggest you should let go of some details in order to grow… and the important thing is that you have all the things needed for growth: soil, seeds, and the person who is planting and caring for them…

Thank you for sharing your thoughts and dreams with us … they contain lots of wisdom…
    Take care.

Someone once recorded crickets and then played the recording back at a much slower speed and you know what it sounded like? An ANGEL CHOIR! Wow, when I heard the recording, I thought: ” I knew it! So many times when I listen to the wind in the trees, yes, even apple trees, or ocean waves and pounding surf, cricket and frog chirps, I swear I hear Angels singing! So, when someone actually discovered it on a slowed down recording, I wondered to myself what the rocks and canyons that are so, so old sound like? They probably sing or talk so slowly we’d have to be here for a long time to hear their wisdom. Hmmm what this has to do with the dream? I’m not sure, but apples are supposedly the fruit in the Adam and Eve story, so it is probably a very archetypal fruit that points to it being something that affects the whole human race. And, I’ve always thought about good luck and positive things when I think of crickets. So my take on it is that you are telling yourself in dream language that you are planting the seeds of life and knowledge for your self that these seeds will be tended by the guardians of good fortune and luck. ooooo, I like the sound of that. Hope you get this comment. I realize it is from an older pose of yours, but I am working my way through all the entries I missed, before you showed up on my radar. Much good luck to you, dear One. Your dreams are yours alone. No one can interpret them for you. It is very eerie though that I found this piece. For the last few days there has been a flood of crickets into my yard. None of my neighbors have had this problem. And the crickets are finding there way into my house. It seems like they are everywhere. Under every rock, potted plant, stone step, even in the open grass. There are millions of them. The strangest part of it all is that most of them are dying or are already dead when I find them. They look healthy enough… but something is wrong with them. They seem to be convulsing or something. Only a few can jump straight, and nearly all of them jump toward me when I find them. Any thoughts?
